Folfox Chemotherapy is Used with Colon Cancer in Mind

One of the most notable forms of treatment for colon cancer is Folfox chemotherapy. This is a type of chemo treatment that uses three critical materials. These are folinic acid, fluorouracil and Oxalipatin. These are where the Folfox name comes from.

This is a type of drug that has been used for colon cancer for decades. It works with an IV treatment to ensure that colon cancer will be relieved as cancer cells will be eliminated from the body.

How the Treatment Works

Folfox chemotherapy will work for a number of weeks. It will work through a series of cycles. Each cycle will last for two weeks.

Folinic acid and Oxyalipatin will be used on the first day of treatment. These will be injected into the body through an IV unit for a few hours. Fluorouracil will then be injected into the body for a little over twenty hours. This will work for a full day process.

Folinic acid will continue to be added after the first day ends. The third to fourteenth days of a cycle will then consist of a lack of drugs being inserted into the body. A new cycle will then start after the fourteenth day in the old cycle ends. The entire process will start from the beginning when a new cycle begins.

The Folfox chemotherapy should work at a proper hospital that treats cancer patients. However, there are some cases where a patient can use Folfox chemotherapy at home as long as a central line and the right drugs are being used.

Common Effects From Folfox

There are some cases where Folfox chemotherapy may cause side effects. The most common effect is a higher than average body temperature. This could be a problem that will relate to a person’s ability to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Also, fatigue may end up occurring as a result of the treatment. The toes and other extremities may also become numb during the treatment process. This is a common concern that may be found in a number of chemo cases.

Nausea and shortness of breath can also occur. This could be due to a loss of red blood cells from the treatment.

In summary, Folfox is a useful type of treatment that may help to treat cases of colon cancer. This treatment works with a series of cycles that are easy to follow. The side effects might impact a patient’s life in a number of different ways though.
